Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a veritable zeitgeist of pop-cultures mashing up against each other to deliver a romance unlike anything we'll likely see for the next decade.

A great comic book is made up of a delicate blend of artwork and storyline that leaps off the page. With comic books adapted for the screen already having made said leap, they must do more than simply use the source material as a storyboard – a vibe must be captured, some kind of sync between the creator and the director must be demonstrated, an evocation of nostalgia for the reader of the comic must be stirred and ideally, those not familiar with the material will be swept away onto the bandwagon. Edgar Wright manages to hit all of the above-mentioned notes to create a Torontonian experience unlike any other, blending elements of comic books, video games, indie music, and most importantly, movies.

Chances are, you've met a guy kind of like Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) a likable slacker who is lucky and clumsy with the ladies, and plays bass in a mediocre indie band. Scott is taking some time off from serious relationships by spending his time with a high school girl 6 years his junior when he meets the girl of his dreams, literally. Ramona Flowers (the completely unrecognizable Mary Elizabeth Winstead) a roller blading courier for, recently transplanted from the United States, has been taking a subspace shortcut through Scott's subconscious. When he finally meets her face to face, he is instantly smitten, and Ramona soon warms to his less awkward than usual Michael Cera-esquire charms. There's only one problem, Ramona's got some skeletons in her closet. Skeletons covered in muscles, flesh and clothing with crouching tiger kung fu skills in the form of Ramona's ex-boyfriends (and girlfriend, rrrrraow. Turns out that if Scott wants to be with Ramona, he'll have to defeat the League of Evil Exes…and maybe even clean up some of his own messes while he's at it. Fortunately, Scott is the number one rated fighter in all of Ontario, so he can handle them. (It might not say so in the movie, but trust me, it's in the books. Besides, the fights are just allegorical for the personal issues Scott and Ramona have to lay to rest before they can get together, so why does it matter whether this 98 pound weakling can nail a 64 hit mid-air combo? The first thing you'll notice about this movie is the pre-credit Universal logo, rendered in glorious 8-bit like a Donkey King table top at your favourite seedy tavern. And with that, the tone is set for the next two hours. Just about everything hat unfolds on screen, from the bathroom breaks to the high scores in the aftermath of each skirmish is coloured with the same playful Nintendo brush. Edgar Wright, the mad scientist behind such genre benders/blenders as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead has proved himself to be positively soaked in the language of cinema. And I don't mean the techniques of Orson Welles or Jean-Luc Godard, I mean every pop-culture gem of the last 20 or even 30 years. He understands exactly how we glean information off the silver screen and he's devised his own cinematic shorthand to deliver that information faster and funnier than anyone else. It's the kind of style that comes in handy adapting a book that tends to express itself in images in feelings more than thoughts and words.

What is at the heart of its triumph, besides its innate sense of fun, is the tension/conflict/torsion between Toronto's reality in which it is so cozily nested with locations like Lee's Palace, Casa Loma and Pizza Pizza, and the fighting flights of fancy as Scott engages in fisticuffs that are one half Street Fighter 2 and one half Dance Dance Revolution. The mundane and the magical collide with each other to a deftly handled soundtrack as only a music lover like Wright could deliver.

With all of this bombast going on, it's easy to forget that this really is a love story. And that is perhaps where I find this movie's only shortcoming. Even if it's Wright's scrambled take on the "boy meets girl" story, there needed to be a tender heart to this take, and that is what Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is lacking. Everything is just too neon & plastic – and perhaps that's the point. Perhaps Wright was trying to make a statement of the transitory nature of young modern love… or perhaps Wright's directed a little too much bromance and not enough romance.

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Whole Generation of Women” is a song made by Negative XP. The track takes a stab at the prevailing culture of hedonism western women take part in. E dgar Wright takes the ache out of "achingly cool" with his entertaining, hyperactive gamer-geek comedy Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, set in freezing cold Toronto and based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Despite riffing on some apparently emotional themes – male romantic status-anxiety is brought interestingly into parallel with Canada's cultural cringe to the United States – Wright insists on nothing more than comedy and the spectacle of pastiche, an entertainment of Seinfeldian inconsequence. The movie has been attacked in some quarters for lack of heart, and for an alleged lack of box office nous in pitching to a demographic that favours illegal downloads over ticket-buying. I can only say that where some see shallowness, I saw a witty interplay of surfaces and style. Our hero is Scott Pilgrim, bassist in the crashingly loud local band Sex Bob-omb and keen player of video games, activities that encompass the sum total of his cultural life. An interest in literature surfaces briefly when he realises that the love of his life has a job making special deliveries for Amazon, and so orders a book – the title of which is irrelevant and unmentioned. Scott is played by Michael Cera, perhaps the most sexually unthreatening male in the history of cinema, with a gentle, moonish face that makes him look like an early-60s Beatle. Scott and his band are not slackers, exactly: Wright shows them industriously rehearsing and worrying about their romantic and musical careers, but they are so utterly unworried about earning a living that they could as well be in college or even high school. Scott has a love life that, though notionally filled with angst, is actually beyond the wildest dreams of most real-life saddos and geeks. He has been dumped by impossibly glamorous blonde singer Envy Adams (Brie Larson), but now into a platonic rebound relationship with teenage schoolgirl Knives Chau, played by 25-year-old Ellen Wong, to the tetchy disapproval of his sister Stacey (Anna Kendrick). But then he falls for unattainably cool Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who has just moved to Canada from New York – the number she gives him still has the 212 area code. Their forbidden love begins to blossom, but Scott is confronted with a terrible quest: he must do battle with Ramona's seven evil exes, led by Gideon (Jason Schwartzman), the oleaginous New York record boss who holds the destiny of Sex Bob-omb in his hands and is given to snide solecisms such as "Between you and I". The titanic battles between Scott and each vengeful ex are, of course, entirely stylised, sorcery-fantasy contests whose choreography can exist only on a gamer's computer screen: they are different, in their way, from the martial arts confrontations in, say, Tarantino's Kill Bill or Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, because they are so unreal and unserious, and always liable to be interrupted and undermined with throwaway gags. Each face-off exists only to facilitate comedy and a continuous fizz of generic pastiche, and even the romance isn't to be taken too straight. There is one quietly tremendous moment when Scott is whacked hard, and flies through the air away from us, in the direction of the camera's sightline, holding a roughly static position on screen but dwindling in size to a tiny insect-like figure, before finally crashing into a distant castle. "Surreal" is an overused and misused adjective, and yet applicable here. The more potent duel is the one Cera always loses: the comedy duel in which he will perpetually be upstaged by the evil competitor. Brandon Routh, a former Superman, plays Ramona's ex-boyfriend Todd Ingram, who has evil superpowers that are dependent on his fanatical veganism, and for whom dairy products are Kryptonite. The movie is always close to being stolen by Scott's gay flatmate Wallace (Kieran Culkin), who provides a comic perspective on the lead character. He is prone to crash into the apartment late at night ("Guess who's drunk? ") and wreak havoc with Scott's need for privacy. Culkin plays what might be called the "Nick Frost" role: part-pundit, part-intimate. Scott Pilgrim is an intriguing picture for being so exotic and eccentric, and for aligning itself with the style and structure of a videogame rather than a film: following not conventional narrative arcs, but a series of game-levels and flavouring this sequence, not with the usual dramatic reversals and character-development, but with an open-ended comic shtick. My only reservation is that Wright could have afforded to relax a little more, to take his foot off the pastiche-pedal and give his comedy more breathing space. Having said that, this is an entertaining and distinctive display of technique, an exhilarating demonstration of film-making IQ.

Everything about it is freaking amazing. Or maybe it's because i literally have a crunch on all the cute girls in it. Whatever. ever since i've first seen it, i come back to it every once in a while and i still enjoy it every time, like the first time. Watch online scott pilgrim vs. the world (2010) movie free. That's a lot to cover, but they got the real gist of it. Well, except for... the thing with Knives Chau. And now, you either get what I'm referring to, or you don't. But I think most people know what I'm talking about when I mention Knives Chau. Cause see, in the comic book, Scott inevitably ends up being with Ramona. They give it another try at the end and we hope for the best. They're meant to be. And that does happen in the movie as well, that does happen. But the strange thing is, and I felt it for about the last half of the running time... the strange thing is, it kinda feels like the film's leading towards another ending, one where Scott learns the error of his ways, matures, and reunites with Knives at the end. The narrative seems like it's building towards that outcome. It doesn't shake out that way, so I was just left baffled that the tone suggested it was veering towards that. Seemed like they had the Knives ending in mind but changed their minds at the last moment and chopped it out and replaced it with the Ramona ending. … Expand 0 of 3 users found this helpful 0 3 Where to begin. I loved this movie! It's original, hilarious, and I love Michael Cera to death. When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was going to be just another quirky romance flick, but it proved to be so much more. The originality was stunning! It's not your average everyday movie where you can tell what's going to happen right off the bat. Cera's character faces challenges and personal demons just like you would in real life. Which brings me to my next point, the characters. All of them are far from cardboard cut-outs like you tend to see nowadays. The main character is perfect and has absolutely no flaws or debts. Scott is sort of dim-witted and frozen in time after his girlfriend dumps him, and ends up living across the street from the house he grew up in. Sad, right? It's those pathetic aspects of him that makes him into this believable, honest, even lovable character. SP vs. TW is a must-see.
